Empowered Enigmas
Choosing to create artwork of Black women is a decision rooted in a deep appreciation for their rich history, strength, and beauty. My work aims to celebrate and uplift their stories, recognizing the profound impact they have on both history and contemporary society.
Black women embody a powerful paradox: they are both an enigma and a beacon of empowerment. This duality is woven into their daily lives, where they navigate a world that often overlooks their brilliance while constantly breaking boundaries and redefining success.
My First P.I.C.
Creating my first piece of art featuring a Black woman was a journey of discovery and reflection. As I set out to capture her essence, I was inspired by the rich history, strength, and beauty inherent in her story. Each brushstroke and color choice aimed to honor her individuality and the collective power she represents.
This piece is more than just art; it's a tribute to the resilience and grace that define Black women. I strived to portray not only her external features but also the inner strength and wisdom that radiate from within. In capturing her portrait, I felt a profound connection to her narrative, acknowledging both the struggles she may face and the triumphs she embodies.
My Prints vs My Paintings
I am often asked why I don't create prints of my paintings. For me, when it comes to art, the distinction between prints and paintings can bring out intriguing variations, even when depicting the same character. In my recent work, the divergence between the print and the painting of the same character reflects different artistic intentions and processes.
In this piece, I call the character History. The painting is a deeply personal creation, where each brushstroke adds a layer of texture and emotion. It's a one-of-a-kind piece that captures the character's essence through the nuances of color, form, and texture. The painting process allows for a hands-on approach, infusing the character with a unique, tangible quality that resonates with its creator's touch.
On the other hand, the prints serve as a means to share the character more broadly. While they reproduce the character’s image with precision, prints often lack the tactile depth of a painting. They offer a different perspective, focusing on the character’s visual appeal.
